Introduction to Philosophy

Introduces major ideas and philosophers of the Western Hemisphere. Defines and analyzes a number of these ideas and develops a historical progression.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify major philosophers and their positions
2. Distinguish among foundational philosophical concepts
3. Contextualize (i.e. culturally, socially, historically) the positions of a variety of philosophers
4. Classify philosophical ideas within major branches of philosophy
5. Evaluate the use of some philosophical precepts in personal or professional contexts
6. Relate classical notions of philosophy to current issues
7. Assess how popular culture contains and reflects theories from philosophy
8. Discuss how selected philosophical ideas apply to a professional or personal field of interest (e.g. social justice, theatre, nursing, fine arts, criminal justice, human services, etc.)
